Hiawatha Valley Mental Health opens in-house pharmacy | Community

A unique on-site pharmacy specializing in serving people with mental illness, substance use disorders and other complex chronic conditions held its grand opening within the Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, Inc. in Winona on Monday May 9, joined by the leaders of the center and local officials.

The new Genoa Healthcare Pharmacy will assist people receiving services at the Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, Inc., which provides many services to the community, including child/adolescent/adult therapy, case management, and psychiatry services; drug services; school-related behavioral health services; therapeutic services and support for children; adult mental health rehabilitation services; addiction treatment services; peer support services; residential services; and mobile crisis services.

In Minnesota, approximately one in 20 adults lives with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. Research shows that when pharmacy services are integrated with healthcare providers, people are more likely to get their prescriptions and stick to their medication plans. Genoa’s specialty pharmacy services include the use of pre-filled pill boxes to help people stay on their medications, proactive outreach calls, help with pre-authorizations, and other convenient pharmacy care.

This approach to pharmaceutical care helps patients stay on their medications at a rate of over 90%, compared to around 50% with a traditional approach. A study published in a peer-reviewed journal found that this type of integrated pharmacy also reduces emergency room visits and hospitalizations, which significantly lowers the total cost of care.

“Genoa has gone above and beyond as a partner of Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, as we tirelessly work together to improve the health and well-being of others through the services we provide,” said Erik Sievers, Executive Director from Hiawatha Valley Mental Health. Center, Inc. “They have been a great addition to our clinic and the community. We all benefit from their presence.

Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, Inc. and leaders of Genoa Healthcare were joined by elected officials. This included a ribbon cutting followed by lunch.

“Our proximity to care teams helps us develop a close and trusting relationship with providers and case managers – and effectively become extensions of their teams,” said Andrea Schroeder, Genoa Operations Director for the Minnesota. “We look forward to providing specialized and convenient pharmaceutical care to the community at Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, Inc.”
